The CI/O R16 is a powerfull digital input-output module, that concentrates on a single board the hardware commonly available on two different cards. The high integration of this module, as well as all grifo® cards, allows a reduction both in space and cost of users' application. The card needs only two Bytes in addressing space and it selects input or output sections through Reading or Writing operations. Software initialization is not required for card use. During Power On or after a Reset (if not disabled through a jumper) the CI/O R16 through a dedicated circuitry disables the 16 relays, by avoiding hazardous random settings on outputs contacts. Only after a writing operation on one of the two registers, the protection circuitry allows the relays setting and informs user that the card is working properly by switching on the LED corresponding to its register. Each Relay is provided of a transient voltage suppressor put on its contacts and each Relay is equipped with a LED that shows Relay status.

The 16 lines are galvanically coupled and are equipped with a filter and a LED that shows the status of each input line. This features provide an high immunity to external noise and an immediate sight control of input status.

The connection to external electronics is performed by two connectors with standard I/O pin out, located on the front size of card. One connector is used for inputs and the other one for outputs; this separation allows to increase noise immunity and card reliability.

The connection of I/O signals to the field become easier by using BLOCK modules, especially the FCB series; in fact FBCs allow an easy and direct connection of the wires from the two flat cable to quick release screw terminal connectors. The most suitable ones are the FBC 34, FBC 20, FBC 120, FBC L34 and FBC L20 and these last two modules show the input line status through on board LEDs, allowing an easier cabling test even when cards are mounted into a rack.

There are two different configuration for CI/O R16 card: the first one uses two different power supply (+5 Vdc for electronic of the card and +12Vdc for relays), while the second one uses a single +5 Vdc power supply. This feature is really interesting as it reduces both space and cost of the small applications being the two different power suppliers no more needed.
